the desktop file for 8.5 has a new name

The desktop file format has been upgraded in 8.5 and is now called desktop8.ndk. The desktop in 6/7/8 was desktop6.ndk. If you upgrade directly from 6/7/8 to 8.5, the desktop will be upgraded automatically. If you've installed 8.5 as a new setup, you can delete the existing desktop8.ndk and copy your old desktop6.ndk to the data folder and it will get upgraded for you (and preserve the desktop icons). Just make sure Notes is not running while you delete or copy desktop files.
